“Over 100,000 passengers logged on to ryanair.com to take part in our competition and almost one in three (over 30,000)think that very large passengers should be asked to pay a fat tax.

“With passengers voting overwhelmingly for a ‘fat tax’ we are now asking them to suggest which format the charge should take. The above four points seem to us to be the simplest, fairest and administratively easiest to apply. In all cases we’ve limits at very high levels so that a ‘fat tax’ will only apply to those really large passengers who invade’ the space of the passengers sitting beside them.

“These charges, if introduced might also act as an incentive to some of our very large passengers to lose a little weight and hopefully feel a little lighter and healthier.

“The revenues from any such fat tax will be used to lower the airfares for all Ryanair passengers yet further. Passengers can vote for their preference on www.ryanair.com until Monday 27th April”.

Beauvais Airport Closed 03rd-10th June 09 inclusive
Ryanair has been advised by Paris Beauvais Airport that due to essential runway works that the airport will be closed between the 3rd - 10th June 2009 (inclusive). Ryanair sincerely regrets that as a consequence, we have been forced to cancel all flights to/from Paris Beauvais Airport during this period We sincerely apologise to all passengers affected by these flight cancellations which are outside of Ryanair's control.

Нискотарифната авиокомпания Ryanair отчете първата си годишна загуба, след като беше засегната от по-високите цени на горивото и беше принудена да намали стойността на дела си в конкурентната Aer Lingus, съобщи BBC.

Ирландската авиокомпания има нетна загуба в размер на 169 млн. евро за годината до 31 март. Година по-рано компанията постигна печалба от 481 млн. евро.

Годишните продажби на превозвача са се увеличили с 8,4% до 2,94 млрд. евро.

От компанията казват, че разходите за гориво са нараснали до 1,26 млрд. евро от 791,3 млн. година по-рано, след като петролът достигна рекордни нива миналото лято.

Загубата на Ryanair се оказа по-голяма от очакванията на анализатори.

През януари офертата на Ryanair за придобиване на оставащия дял от Aer Lingus беше официално отхвърлена от ирландското правителство с мотива, че тя „значително подценява“ стойността на компания

Ryanair to order up to 300 new planes by year-end

BERLIN : Irish low-cost airline Ryanair is to order or take firm options on up to 300 new aircraft from Boeing or Airbus by the end of the year, its boss Michael O'Leary said in an interview to be published Monday.

He told German weekly magazine Der Spiegel that Ryanair, which announced a net loss earlier this month, wanted to double its operating profit this year.

Saying that cut-price operators always benefited from a recession, in aviation or trade, O'Leary said Ryanair would be seeking to take advantage of low prices from manufacturers.

"That is why we want to order from Boeing or Airbus, or take firm options on, up to 300 new planes by the end of the year," he said.

Ryanair, which currently operates some 190 aircraft, all Boeing 737s, will be carrying up to 150 million passengers a year by 2017, compared with 58.5 million last year, O'Leary predicted.

The flamboyant airline boss also told Der Spiegel that recent remarks expressing interest in acquiring German flag-carrier Lufthansa were not a joke, but gave no details.

On June 2 Ryanair reported an annual net loss of 169 million euros (239 million dollars) that it blamed on high fuel costs and a large writedown on its stake in Aer Lingus.

The loss, suffered in the 12 months to the end of March, compared with net profit of 390.71 million euros in the group's previous financial year.

It predicted it would bounce back into the black in the current financial year with net profits of 200-300 million euros thanks to lower fuel costs.

Last week Ryanair said it would cut 650 more jobs in Ireland, blaming the move on government hikes in taxes amid a deep recession in the eurozone member nation.

And on Tuesday it said was freezing the expansion of bases in Britain in protest at government tax measures and high charges levied by airport operator BAA.

"Ryanair will switch its growth to other EU countries where low cost airports are growing and where governments are welcoming tourists not taxing them," O'Leary said.
