New Sofia passenger terminal already needs expansion
Just six months after opening, the brand-new terminal at Sofia International Airport in Bulgaria has been overwhelmed by passenger traffic, sending officials scurrying for expansion options. The traffic load is set to climb further with many airlines planning to increase their flights to and from Sofia in 2007. Full capacity was not anticipated until 2009. The airport handled 2.2 million passengers in 2006 and recorded a 21 percent year-on-year increase towards the end of May 2007.
Transport minister Petar Mutafchiev said a meeting of experts will be held to discuss the possible expansion of the terminal. However Sofia airport executive director Plamen Stanchev maintained that there was no imminent danger of hitting the capacity threshold before 2011.
